How long then, will you seek for beauty here? Seek the unseen, and beauty will appear.

— Farid-Uddin-Attar

Farīd al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ʿAṭṭār b. early 12th century AD - Nisharpur, Persia

Known by his pen name Farid ud-Din ‘Attar, the Persian Muslim poet was one of the greatest Sufi writers and thinkers of his time. While little is known about his life, Attar was probably the son of a prosperous chemist, receiving an excellent education in various fields. It is known that the people he helped in his father’s pharmacy used to confide in `Attar and in-turn their troubles affected him deeply. Eventually, he abandoned his work as a chemist and traveled widely from Baghdad, Basra, Kufa, to Mecca, Medina, Turkistan, and India meeting with mystics and people of knowledge along the way. ‘Attar has composed approximately 45,000 distichs (couplets) and many brilliant prose works of which Manteq al-Tayr (Conference of the Birds) is his greatest.
